WWII History of Route 66 in St. Robert Missouri

The Historic Route 66 was a roadway dating back to the early 1920's.  It ran through the area we now call St. Robert Missouri to gain access to Fort Leonard Wood Military Base.  During that time, a large training camp was created at Fort Leonard Wood just after World War II began. This camp gained so much traffic that business began to form along this stretch of highway to accommodate the people traveling.  The town of St. Robert wasn't established until 1951 but the area has so much rich history that can still be seen throughout town.  The historic diners, motels, and attractions are must-see landmarks to check out when in the area.  We are fortunate enough to still have these landmarks in our town to continue the Route 66 legacy.

The Route 66 Diner is a step back in time to the 1950's.  In the 1950's roadside diners began to take off and became a big hit for everyone to hang out.   At the Route 66 Diner in St. Robert, MO, you can enjoy home cooked meals at a reasonable price.  They even are known for their famous shake, rattle and roll shakes!  Come hungry because their menu has a lot to choose from.  Make sure you grab a few coins because this diner still has an old-school jukebox to listen to your favorite tunes while enjoying your meal.  This stop is a great place to grab a great meal and a memorable picture, making it a must-see landmark along Route 66.

The Route 66 Roadside Park dates back to 1955.  This historic park was named after George M. Reed.  He first settled in Missouri after the Civil War at the age of eleven.  He was skilled in many areas and it showed throughout is life.  He was a teacher, county surveyor, lawyer, appointed postmaster, and a newspaper publisher. In 1919, he was appointed the Project Engineer of the Pulaski County Highways by the State Highway Department.  It was only natural with all of his accomplishments and history with the area's highway system that they name this Route 66 Roadside park after him. It is the only remaining roadside park along Route 66 in Missouri.  It is home to the M-60 tank from the Desert Storm War.

Stay tuned for updates on this historic park because it is about to make history again.  In the near future, this park will become the first ever Neon Park.  The goal is to preserve the history of the park but add to it so it continues to be a destination for visitors traveling along Route 66.  Upon nightfall, this park will light up and become magical! This is a great place to stop and see history up close and stretch your legs at the same time.

The Uranus Fudge Factory is a huge attraction for many traveling along Route 66.  Located just minutes from any Fort Wood Hotels in St. Robert, Missouri, this is an attraction we tell all of our guests about.  It has more than just candy, it takes you back in time.  In addition to the fudge factory, there is a general store to buy souvenirs to remember this epic road trip.  Our fun store has plenty of great places for you to grab that photo of your group to remember this one of a kind attraction.
