Prepare Your Pet for a Long Trip

If your pet is not used to being in a vehicle, it's wise to start taking them on short drives leading up to your trip. Consider bringing them along on your commute when you can, take them to a park for a walk, or even just take them for a trip across town with no real destination. Taking shorter trips leading up to your road trip can help to reduce the stress of being in the vehicle for an extended period of time.

Pack the Vet Records

While you likely won't need them, it's a good idea to carry proof of rabies vaccination just in case. It's possible you may be asked for them while traveling and it's better to play it safe than wish you would have packed it along.

Prepare a Pet Travel Kit

Don't forget to pack along the pet essentials! It's a good idea to pack a pet travel kit that is easy to get to during long trips. Below are a few essentials you should consider packing:

Travel size food and water bowl
Leash
Pet waste disposable bags
Favorite pillow or blanket to keep them comfortable
Water bottles
Toys to keep them occupied

Your pet will need to stay hydrated during the trip and it's best to pack water bottles for them to drink. Water at rest areas and gas stations could potentially have something in it that pets are not used to and upset their stomach during your trip. It's also best to feed your pet several hours before departure and avoid feeding them until you get to your destination.

Don't Leave Your Pet Unattended in a Vehicle

It's best to never leave your pet alone in your vehicle. Hopefully, you are traveling with someone else so someone can be with them at all times. Not only can leaving them alone cause stress, but your vehicle can also get extremely hot in a limited amount of time inside the car, or someone could potentially take your pet while you are gone.
